The Dreaded Seating Chart

By Bridget Mora

It is very exciting as the replies to your wedding invitation start to arrive in your mailbox. As you mark off the acceptances on your master list, the seating chart is probably the furthest thing from your mind. But be prepared, because once the final headcount is in, it will be time to tackle one of the most dreaded tasks in wedding planning.

You may wonder why you should even bother with arranging a seating chart. The reason is that someone has to decide where everyone will sit. Either you do your duty as the host, or your guests will be left to fend for themselves. I once attended a wedding without planned seating, and instead of mingling during the cocktail hour, the guests were going around tipping in chairs to reserve spots for their families. It was like an adult version of musical chairs, and it definitely detracted from the reception. If the bride and groom had done their job, most of the people who wanted to be together at dinner already would have been arranged that way.

The place to start is with the head table. First of all, you have to decide if you want the traditional long table with the bride, groom, and their attendants, or the trendier Sweetheart table for just the bride and groom. If my vote counts for anything, I would nix the Sweetheart table, because it makes the bride and groom unapproachable. They will have plenty of time to be alone together on the honeymoon; the wedding reception is a good time to see your guests.

Typically, there is a hierarchy of tables at a wedding reception. The ones closest to the bride and groom are considered to be prime real estate, and are usually reserved for immediate family like parents, grandparents, and siblings (unless they are attendants, in which case they would sit at the head table). With all of the variables in family configurations these days, it is not uncommon to have three or four tables that share equal honor.

For instance, if the bride’s parents are divorced, you would certainly not seat them together. Each should head their own table, seated with their spouses and other close relatives or dear friends. Do your best to maintain equal proximity between the newlyweds’ table and the tables seating the assorted parents to avoid any appearance of favoritism or snubbing. (People can be awfully touchy about where they are seated! Come to think of it, that might be why some couples try to wash their hands of it altogether.)

The groups will radiate out from there. Usually close friends of your parents will be seated closer to the head table than personal friends of the bride and groom. The far back corner by the kitchen is designated for the people from your office that you only invited out of obligation. Of course, sometimes those peripheral tables end up being where the most fun is taking place during the dinner.

A good rule of thumb is to mix groups of people from your different spheres. So that nobody has to dine with total strangers, it is nice to put a married couple with another couple that they already know, and then two more that they do not. Please do not set aside a table just for singles – it makes them feel like leftovers. Instead, mix a couple of single guests in with the pairs at each table.

One of your primary duties at a host is to put together people who will enjoy each other’s company. You want to spark lively conversation. For example, if you know that your mother’s best friend and your fiance’s aunt both love jewelry, seat them together. They will enjoy complimenting each other on their wedding jewelry, chatting about the wedding jewelry on the other guests, and so forth. On the flip side, if you know that two guests have very strong, opposite views on a subject like politics, put them at tables across the room from one another.

Love is in the air at a wedding, and while you don’t want to be overtly matchmaking, there is nothing wrong with seating together two singles that you think might fall for each other. Lots of married couples meet their mate at weddings. If your clever seating assignment played a part in inspiring a new romance, maybe that would take some of the sting out of dealing with the seating chart!

Eurovision ’82 winner Nicole talks about ‘Ein bißchen Frieden’, her success and the Contest today

Monday, February 2, 2009

It has been nearly 27 years since Nicole, then a high school student from the Saarland in extreme western Germany, sang a heartfelt plea for world peace on the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. That simple message was wrapped with success; she became the first German in Contest history to take home the grand prize. The song was a brainchild of her former record producer, Ralph Siegel, and would be their greatest achievement in their nearly three-decade partnership.

Afterward, she was propelled to stardom across Europe by recording versions of her winning song, “Ein bißchen Frieden” (A little peace), in many European languages. To this day, it was the last winning Eurovision song to top the charts in the United Kingdom; it also has the distinction of being the 500th #1 single on the British charts.

This newfound fame brought her music to audiences across Europe, and in time, into Asia as well. By the end of the 1980s, however, her fame subsided somewhat and she refocused her career domestically. Since 1980, she has released over 30 albums in Germany; her most recent offering, Mitten ins Herz (Right into your heart), was accompanied by a three-month “unplugged” tour that ended in the third week of January.

Now off the road, Nicole spoke with Wikinews’ Mike Halterman about her past success, her life and career today, and her overall impressions of the Eurovision Song Contest, both past and present. This is the first in a series of interviews with past Eurovision contestants, which will be published sporadically in the lead-up to mid-May’s next contest in Moscow.

Donald Trump reacts to ‘Pimp’ comments

Friday, December 29, 2006

Real estate tycoon Donald Trump on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 reacted to Rosie O’Donnell’s comments about him on the The View.

“Rosie has some real problems,” Trump said on Anderson Cooper 360. “Rosie’s a loser. She’s been a loser always.”

It started when Miss USA Tara Conner was caught under age drinking. Trump, the owner of the Miss Universe Organization, gave her a second chance. Rosie O’Donnell called him a “Pimp” on her personal blog and said he has no right to be “the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America” on The View, which she co-hosts.

“Rosie got mentally beaten up by me,” Trump told The Post yesterday, “because she’s a mental midget, a low-life.”

“It’s too bad a degenerate is able to get away with things like that,” Trump said yesterday. “I met Tara the night of the pageant and didn’t see her again until she got into trouble.”

Trump said that he would sue her over her comment.

“It will never end on my behalf because I’ve exposed Rosie for what she is: a very dumb human being,” Trump told the Associated Press. “She’s got no intelligence, but I’ve known that for a long time. Unfortunately, Rosie’s pulled the wool over the public.”

When CNN contacted O’Donnell, one of her representatives said she was unavailable for comment. CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 also said that she is welcome to comment anytime.

Man auctions his life on eBay, is disappointed at sale price

Monday, June 30, 2008

After auctioning off his entire life on eBay for A$399,300 (244 912.148) Ian Usher says he is “a little bit disappointed” at the final selling price.

The 44-year-old British immigrant living in Perth, Australia, put all of his worldly belongings up for sale on the popular auction website, including his three-bedroom house and all its contents, his car, motorcycle, jetski, skydiving gear, and his job at a rug store, for which he offered a two week trial period. He even offered introductions to his friends living in Perth.

Usher made the decision to sell his life after his five-year marriage suddenly ended. On his website, alife4sale.com, he explains that “despite my life being busy and fulfilled, I still miss my wife so much. Everything in my home is a reminder of the wonderful past we shared. So, after a year in this house I decided that it is time to sell it and move on.”

It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.

During the 7 day auction, which ended on Sunday, there were several bogus bids which brought the sale price as high as A$2.2 million, but the final price ended up at A$399,300, which was around A$100,000 less than Usher had hoped for. “I’m a little bit disappointed, but I’m still excited. It’s still enough to move forward and do what I said I was going to do, which is move on to the next part of my life,” Usher said. “It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.”

According to Reuters, the winning bidder, whose username is “mslmcc”, also lives in Australia, and has a 100 percent feedback rating. Usher says he hasn’t yet been able to figure out who the buyer is, because of the TV crews lined up in front of his home. “I’m trying to find some time to get on the computer and check it out … I haven’t looked (up) anything about them yet,” he said.

Usher now plans to go off in search of a new life. His initial plan, as he describes on his website, was to just walk out his front door with just his wallet and a passport and board a train, with no idea of where to go. He has since launched 100goals100weeks.com, which will document his attempt to complete 100 of his life goals in a span of 100 weeks. Some of these goals include getting a pilot’s license, climbing the Eiffel Tower, learning to play the didgeridoo, and shaking hands with billionaire Richard Branson.

“I was pretty aimless when I started this, and I had a vague notion of adventure, but I’ve come up with a much more solid plan, which is still very adventurous,” Usher says. He invites anyone who is interested to join him on his adventures.
