FC Barcelona presents project for new Camp Nou stadium

Saturday, September 22, 2007

British architect Norman Foster and FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta presented today in Barcelona the redevelopment project for the team’s stadium, Camp Nou, built in 1957.

The Catalan club expects that this redesign will turn the stadium into a city landmark and that “the external image of the stadium will become a recognized brand for FCB.” Works will begin in 2008.

The new stadium will be wrapped in a colourful mosaic made up of the team’s colours (blue and red) and those of the Catalan flag (red and yellow) and reminiscent of Gaudi’s style. This reptile-like cover of tiles and lights will allow the stadium to transform itself according to the time of day and the events taking place. The project also includes the building of a retractable roof.

According to the Club, “the remodelled stadium is designed such that it can be built with minimal disruption FCB normal football activity.”

Riding Your Motorcycle Home On A Business Tax Saving

Riding Your Motorcycle Home on a Business Tax Saving

You will be happy to know that the treatment of your motorbike, within your business affairs, for tax purposes is much more favourable than your motor counterparts and whilst owning a company car is an expensive business, owning a company motorcycle isnt. Javeed Baig of Gower Accountants in Leicester explains why.

Assuming you are VAT registered, you can claim upto 100% of the VAT paid on the purchase of your beloved bike. This is on the basis that you use the motorcycle only for business purposes. With a car, no matter how much you use it for business you cannot reclaim the VAT. Motorcycle Tax Benefits Having purchased your motorcycle, you can claim a deduction against tax for the full purchase price in your year of purchase using part of your Annual Investment Allowance of 50,000. A car typically would attract an annual writing down allowance of only 20% per year. In corporation tax terms, for the small business, this represents a saving of 21%. Assuming the VAT reclaim and the corporation tax relief thats a whopping 36% off the purchase price of your motorbike. So you could choose to take the saving, or maybe trade up and get that mean machine that you have always promised yourself. As with a car it is unlikely that you will use your motorcycle only for business and therefore a private use element will occur. Take the assumption that 75% is used for business and 25% is used privately. This 25% is the benefit you have derived from using a company asset and as a result a Benefit in Kind charge will arise on both the company and on you as an individual. How this benefit is calculated is where the magic lies and its where motorcycles ownership thrives and company cars dive. The basic differences are as follows: Motorbike Car Base Value Market Value or Purchase Price List Price When New % for Cash Value Fixed 20% Between 10% & 35% Fuel Benefit Fixed 20% of Usage Base 14,400 fixed Heres an example of the potential tax benefits: Motorcycle costs 8,000. 25% private & 75% business. Cash Value of benefit in kind : 1,600 Reduction Due to Business Usage : 1,200 Taxable Benefit : 400 400 represents your cash value of the benefit from using the company bike. If you are a basic rate taxpayer you will pay 80. The company will pay a further 51.20 National Insurance on this. The equivalent tax position regarding a company car is as follows: Car Cost 8,000 List price 16,000. Some private use assumed. CO2 = 20% Cash Value of benefit in Kind : 3,200 Reduction due to Business Usage : N/A Taxable Benefit : 3,200 Tax At Basic Rate : 640 Company Charge : 410 Moving back to motorcycles you can see the savings on purchase would far exceed the annual cost of owning your bike through a company. Additional Tax Benefits In addition all safety equipment, insurance and fuel can all be paid for by the company with the Benefit in kind calculated in much the same way. The article has been written for information purposes only and does not constitute formal advice. The rates are those prevailing at the time of writing and are subject to change.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Girls Aloud win Popjustice £20 Music Prize

British pop group Girls Aloud have won the 2005 Popjustice £20 Music Prize with their single “Wake Me Up”. The award, organised by music journalist Peter Robinson, is given annually to the best British pop single of the previous 12 months and is a tongue-in-cheek response to the Mercury Music Prize, the winner of which was announced earlier in the evening.

This year’s shortlist included Basement Jaxx, Robbie Williams and Charlotte Church.

This is the second time Girls Aloud have won the award – they won the inaugural prize in 2003 for “No Good Advice”.

Also announced was the winner of the £20 Invoice Prize for the worst British single of the previous 12 months. The winner, charity single Band Aid 20’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, was the UK’s Christmas number one in 2004.

Some Fab Reasons To Have A Water Cooler In Your Home

Submitted by: Nick Swan

Drinking enough high quality water is one of the rules for keeping yourself and the people that you love healthy. There are many things you can do to ensure proper hydration and the purchase of a home water cooler is one of the best possibilities. Many UK families have already discovered these advantages.

Water coolers are often seen as a piece of office or gym equipment but are now new, compact designs that are great for household use, as well. Some models and styles are perfect for families and the customisation possibilities will enable the water cooler to even fit creatively into your interior design concept.

Wondering about purchasing one for your home? Here are some of the most important benefits you are going to enjoy.

Perfectly chilled Wate

Drinking chilled, quality water is one of the best options in terms of hydration. The home water cooler will give you access to this valuable resource regardless of the weather and the temperature outside.

You can choose bottles or you can use the tap water to feed the cooler. Both of these options will result in the availability of fresh and cool drinks for the entire family. The presence of the cooler in your kitchen or sitting room will also serve as a constant reminder of the importance of good hydration.

People often forget to hydrate themselves adequately throughout the day. It s quite easy to forget to take a much needed drink when you re literally swept off your feet. The recommended quantity is at around 8 glasses (1.8 litres) of fluid per day. A cooler solves these problems and simplifies the task by ensuring a constant supply that is always visible and readily available to drink.

A Green Piece of Equipment

Concerned about the environment?

Connecting the water cooler to the main water supply will result in absolutely no waste. Alternatively, you can opt for bottles. The empty bottles will be collected by the water cooler supplier and reused meaning that either option is environmentally-friendly.

Convenience and Orde

Keeping your home organised could be a challenging task, especially if you have young kids. Many parents who love water for their children can imagine this picture water bottles everywhere and absolutely no fridge space available!

Instead of having to store your water bottles in the fridge, you will get your drinks from the home water cooler and make fridge space available plus you will find it much easier to keep your home organised.

Fun!

Customisation possibilities will increase the visual appeal of your water cooler. You can have a lot of fun with the design and you can even get the entire family involved in the creative process.

You can design your cooler to look exciting and different, so that it complements and adds to the personality of your home.

There are so many reasons for the purchase of a home water cooler. Keeping your loved ones healthy is of course, the main priority. A water cooler is also affordable, easy to use and great for enhancing your kitchen design. Give one a try to experience the benefits for yourself.

Study claims to show difference between male and female brains

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Michael Gurian, psychologist and author of “What Could He Be Thinking?“, has claimed to identify approximately one hundred structural differences between male and female brains in a recent study. Gurian comments:

Men, because we tend to compartmentalize our communication into a smaller part of the brain, we tend to be better at getting right to the issue, the more female brain (will) gather a lot of material, gather a lot of information, feel a lot, hear a lot, sense a lot.

One major structural difference that Gurian has made clear is that males generally have more activity in the mechanical centers of the brain, while women have more activity in centers of the brain dedicated to verbal communication and emotion. A clear example of this is the hypothetical situation of giving a child a toy. He explains it as such:

That doll becomes life-like to that girl, but you give it to a two-year-old boy and you are more likely, not all the time, but you are more likely than not to see that boy try to take the head off the doll. He thinks spatial-mechanical. He’s using the doll as an object.

Another expert, Dr. Marianne Legato, says it all boils down to genetics, noting that the Y chromosome (which only males carry) has “at least 21 unique genes unique to males which control many of the body’s operations down to the level of the cells.”

Gurian agrees that culture is significant in brain development, but argues that biology plays an equally important role. He makes a point of how the MRI scans show that the female corpus callosum, the center of the brain which regulates communication between the brain’s hemispheres, is larger than the male’s. On the other hand, the scans also show that information flows more freely between the hemispheres of the male brain.

The exact role that brain structure plays in behavior, however, has been an area of considerable contention in science for literally hundreds of years. Early studies in craniometry conducted by Paul Pierre Broca were used to attempt to distinguish differences between human races, though have now been dismissed as scientific racism. The nature-nurture debate has raged for centuries in a variety of forms, without yet any clear resolution as to the role in which innate biological tendencies interact with environmental conditions or willed behavior. As such, studies relating to brain structure and claims to innate behavior often generate substantial controversy.

MIT anthropologist of science Joseph Dumit’s study of brain imaging in his book Picturing Personhood: Brain Scans and Biomedical Identity, noted that the apparent “transparency” of such pictures (the appearance that they can be easily interpreted by laymen, when they are often the source of ambiguity and dispute by even highly-trained neurosurgeons) has led to their proliferation as indicators of objective truth in media and in courts of law, and that such conclusions are often knowingly exaggerated by the specialists creating the images for better visual effect.

The timing of Gurian’s book comes on the heels of another controversy over gender differences sparked by comments made by Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who blamed low numbers of women in the sciences on genetic differences. Summers has been criticized by a large number of academics and scientists, as well as by many news publications, in the wake of what he was reported as saying during a conference on January 14.

Thursday, October 4, 2007

Pam Hundal is running for the Progressive Conservatives in the Ontario provincial election, in the Bramalea—Gore—Malton riding.

Wikinews’ Nick Moreau requested an interview regarding her values, her experience, and her campaign. In response, Hundal’s campaign office did not send replies to the questions asked, but a general statement. Moreau has excerpted parts of her statement, placing them as answers to related questions. However, a great number of questions have been skipped in the process.

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.

Asbestos victims file 6.6 billion yen class action lawsuit in Tokyo

Saturday, May 17, 2008

Construction workers and next of kin of deceased workers filed a lawsuit in Tokyo, Japan Friday seeking damages of approximately 6.6 billion yen (about US$64 million) from the government and manufacturers related to illnesses stemming from exposure to asbestos. 178 plaintiffs; including construction workers and family members filed the suit in Tokyo District Court against 46 building manufacturers and the Government of Japan.

According to the Mainichi Daily News, the class action suit is the first that has been filed in Japan related to health damages caused by asbestos exposure at construction sites. The plaintiffs hail from the Japanese prefectures of Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba.

The plaintiffs claim that the government and manufacturers knew of the dangers of asbestos inhalation but failed to take proper precautions, including ceasing to promote asbestos as a cheap fire retardant and banning production of the material.

They state that after inhaling asbestos in the workplace, 172 people have developed lung cancer or mesothelioma, and that almost half of those afflicted are now dead. Plaintiffs argue that the government and health ministry did not act quickly enough after international organizations issued warnings in 1972 that asbestos could be a carcinogen.

Plaintiffs also place blame with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for sanctioning the use of asbestos under Japanese Industrial Standards, and with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for approving the use of materials comprised of asbestos and other substances under Japan’s Building Standards Law.

We will do our utmost until we win the suit.

“We will do our utmost until we win the suit,” said Kazuo Miyajima, 78, who heads the group of plaintiffs. Lawyers for the plaintiffs released a statement saying: “We seek complete relief for the victims by clarifying the liability of the state and the manufacturers.”

Approximately 40 construction workers from Kanagawa Prefecture plan to file a similar lawsuit in June in Yokohama District Court.

After a 2005 revelation that residents who lived near a factory in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture developed diseases related to asbestos, the government implemented a law in 2006 which provides monetary assistance to asbestos victims and relatives of deceased family members. The plaintiffs argue that the amount of financial assistance given to families and victims of asbestos-related diseases is not sufficient.

Asbestos has been used in Japan as a fire retardant, for sound absorption, and for insulation. It was mixed in concrete and water and sprayed on walls and ceilings, but the practice of spraying asbestos in this manner was banned in Japan in 1975.

Reasons To Get Automobile Insurance

Submitted by: Michael Hunter

If you are having money problems, driving without car insurance can seem like a good idea to save a little money. However, this is an extremely bad idea because you are only a moment away from an accident. This article is going to tell you why you should never drive without automobile insurance.

The point of car insurance, like all other insurance, is to hope you never have to use it; but, you are prepared and have it in case something was to happen. The worst thing that can happen is getting into an accident and not having insurance, so do not try and save money by cutting car insurance.

If you do not have car insurance and are wondering if you should get it; or, if you are just wondering why you should have car insurance before driving, here are some of the top reasons:

1. If you are involved in an accident and neither you nor the other driver has car insurance, and you require medical care, you will not be covered by any form of personal liability insurance. Personal liability insurance comes with auto insurance packages, and you will lose a lot of money, more so than if you bought auto insurance, trying to pay your medical bills.

2. If you cause an accident and you have no insurance you are leaving the victim in a tight spot. If an accident is your fault than your insurance company is suppose to pay the other drivers company, who in return would pay that driver. However, by not having insurance, you will probably have to pay to fix that persons car with your own money.

3. If your car was either stolen or you got in an accident and had to try and pay the cost of either fixing it or replacing it, you could be looking at no transportation for a long time. If you are trying to save money by not paying for car insurance, you are probably not going to be able to fix or replace a car anytime in the near future. This will hinder your ability to get to work or go places period which will lose you money.

4. You may think that you are not breaking any laws, but you are. If you are driving without car insurance you are driving illegally, which is against the law. Also, if you are caught without car insurance you can loose your license.

5. If you are caught driving without insurance you will be moved to the high risk category for car insurance. This will raise how much your car insurance premium will be when you go to get car insurance, which is a bad thing.

From potentially spending more money than you are saving to breaking the law, there are many reasons for you to get car insurance. There is no good reason for you to drive without automobile insurance and you should never leave the driveway without insurance. Hopefully after reading this article you understand the importance of car insurance and you will be on your way to finding a good auto insurance quote.

UN probing allegations US is ‘torturing’ soldier over leaks

Thursday, December 23, 2010

The United Nations is reportedly beginning an investigation into claims that Pfc. Bradley Manning is being “tortured.” Manning was arrested in May, after allegedly leaking over 250,000 classified diplomatic cables to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

Last week, it was announced that supporters for Manning lodged a complaint with the Office of The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, saying that the conditions of his cell and the treatment he is receiving, amount to “torture.” According to Salon, Manning is not allowed to exercise, is denied bed sheets and pillows, and has been held in solitary confinement for 23 hours of every day since his arrest. According to Manning’s attorney, David Coombs, a former United States Army major, and veteran of the Iraq War, Manning is only allowed to walk in a small room for exercise.

“[Manning is] taken to an empty room and only allowed to walk, normally just walks figure eights in the room. If he indicates that he no long feels like walking, he is immediately returned to his cell,” stated Coombs to Salon.

The Pentagon denies that Manning is being tortured, saying he is being treated “fairly. We’ve been reviewed … No concerns have been voiced from a (Department of Defense) perspective.”
