Fire erupts in parking structure at Sola Airport, Norway

Friday, January 10, 2020

At about 15:30 local time (1430 UTC) on Tuesday a fire was reported in the “Kiss & Fly” section of a parking structure at Stavanger Airport, Sola in Norway. The structure has over 3000 parking spaces; reports said more than half of those were filled. The airport was quickly closed to air traffic.

It was initially reported the fire started in an electric vehicle, but news broadcaster NRK later reported the fire started in a recalled 2005 Opel Zafira. The car was recalled after a similar fire in Cork, Ireland in August last year, causing damage to about 60 cars. Police said they questioned the car’s owner.

The fire produced heavy smoke, and local officials said there was danger the building might collapse. Nils-Erik Haagenrud of Rogaland Fire and Rescue said late on Tuesday no personnel would be sent into the building. Rogaland Fire and Rescue requested support and equipment from other fire departments. The airport and nearby hotel were both evacuated and local police warned people in the general vicinity to stay inside and close exterior vents and windows. Through Tuesday evening the fire was reduced and the order for a fire extinguisher robot from Oslo Fire and Rescue was canceled.

The airport closure also led to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg being stranded after a visit to the Johan Sverdrup oil field. Solberg posted on Twitter asking for places to eat for the seven hour drive from Stavanger to the capital of Oslo.

Reports as of Wednesday said an estimated two to three hundred vehicles had been damaged or destroyed, but no humans had been hurt.

By about 22:00 local time (2100 UTC) on Tuesday the flames were under control. Local firefighters planned to continue to monitor the situation and work to prevent further damage. It was also discovered the structure was built without sprinklers. Stavanger Airport, Sola was to open on Wednesday morning, but returning to normal service was expected to take longer. Affected travelers were advised to contact their airlines for rebooking.

Wikinews interviews Steve Burke, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Sunday, December 13, 2015

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.

Does The 500 Calorie Diet The Right Low Calorie Diet For You?

By Xylene Belita

You are desperate to lose weight. In fact, you are willing to try any crash diets you can get your hands on. You have heard of the 500 calorie diet and want to try it yourself.

Losing your extra weight is always on your mind. You have tried some slimming pills, but still you cannot seem to lose your extra pounds off and keep it off. So, the 500 calorie diet is one diet you want to start now.

The 500 calorie diet is the lowest calorie diet you can have, but it is still very popular among people who wants to lose weight real quickly. The 500 calorie diet is an extreme form of dieting, it takes a lot of risks. So be really careful before you go into it. You must visit your doctor first and get approval before jumping into this kind of crash diet.

Low calorie diet means that you are not allowed to eat more than 1200 calories per day. You can lose weight quickly with low calorie diets. But it can be dangerous to your health, so it is advisable to plan your 500 calorie diet with a professional dietician or nutritionist before you start. Is the 500 calorie diet right for you or not?

The 500 calories per day diet may be right for some people, but it really depends on the following factors: gender, activity level, height, body type and overall health and well being.

A very low calorie diet may do you more harm than good. If you are craving more calories, this will in turn affect your metabolism. Where will your body get the energy it needs? It may actually get energy from your muscle mass, since there are no food reserves available. When this happens, it can be highly detrimental to your health, because the proper way to lose fat is to gain muscle mass, not take it away.

On the other hand, overweight people who will try to consume only 500 calories a day will almost likely be starving themselves. Since the body is more used to taking in more than 2000 calories per day or more, then the sudden drop of calorie intake will signal your body into starvation mode. In this way, the body’s metabolism will slow down to conserve energy.

But if you are able to go on with the 500 calorie diet, your body will get used to taking in fewer calories. That means if you will go back to your old habits eating more than 2000 calories per day, you will have a sudden gain in weight, which is even more weight than if you did not go on a low calorie diet in the first place.

Men and women have different ideal calorie intake. An average woman may need only 1200 to 1300 calories per day, while an average man may need from 1500 to 1600 calories per day. Remember that it is very important to consult your doctor before starting any diet, especially if it involves extreme numbers. You can specifically determine your ideal daily calorie intake by using a bmr/amr calculator. You will find how many calories you need to take daily to be healthy. From this calorie level, take 500 calories away, and this will be your ideal number of calories to take in daily for you to lose weight.

£5.8m Turner watercolour a British record

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

In Britain one of the most important watercolours to be put up for sale in half a century has been snapped up for £5.8 million at Christie’s (actual selling price: £5,832,000 including excess).

In “The Blue Rigi: Lake of Lucerne, Sunrise” the telephone bidder bought a softly glowing yellow sunrise in which JMW Turner trapped a moment of cause and effect – gun, dog and the flight of ducks.

“In a technique of almost unimaginable subtlety Turner expresses his lifelong preoccupation with the effects of light, shade and atmosphere,” said Noel Annesley, honorary chairman of Christie’s, who personally took the gavel for the auction.

The painting has two sister paintings also from Switzerland: The Red Rigi and The Dark Rigi. “Turner had never made any drawings like this before and never made any like them again,” said John Ruskin, the 19th century art critic, when he saw the works.

In 1842 the painting was bought by its first owner Elhanan Bicknell for 80 guineas and was in the property of its latest owners since 1942. The auction house has said they plan to keep the identity of the newest buyer, who paid slightly more than 80 guineas, secret.

In 2000 Rosetti‘s Pandora was the last most expensive watercolour ever sold in Britain – it went for £2.6m, less than half the price of The Blue Rigi.

Kenya government fires health worker strikers over failure to ‘report back to work’

Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Kenyan government has dismissed 25,000 striking health workers, mostly nurses, citing failure to heed government orders to recommence work and concern for the welfare of hospital patients. Speaking on behalf of the government, Alfred Mutua stated the workers were dismissed “illegally striking” and “[defying] the directive … to report back to work”, which he called “unethical”. The government asks that “[a]ll qualified health professionals, who are unemployed and/or retired have been advised to report to their nearest health facility for interviews and deployment”, Mutua stated.

The workers, who had been on strike for four days, were wishing to have improvements made to their wages, working conditions, and allowances. The strikes have caused a significant number of Kenyan hospitals to cease operations. According to Kenya Health Professionals Society spokesperson Alex Orina, the average monthly wage plus allowances for health workers in Kenya is KSh25,000 (£193, US$302 or €230) approximately. With an increasing number of reports of patients neglected in hospitals emerging, two trade unions met with the Kenyan government yesterday and negotitated a return to work, although a significant proportion of demonstrators defied the agreement, The Guardian reported.

Orina told Reuters the dismissals were “cat-and-mouse games, you cannot sack an entire workforce. It is a ploy to get us to rush back to work, but our strike continues until our demands are met”. Frederick Omiah, a member of the same society, believed the government’s actions would “make an already delicate and volatile situation worse”, expressing concern that demonstrations may continue in the capital Nairobi, amongst other locations. Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairperson Dr. Victor Ng’ani described government actions as “reckless”.

Mutua said the health workers were “no longer employees of the government” and had been eliminated from the payroll. While Ng’ani told the BBC of difficulties with finding other workers as skilled and experienced, Mutua reportedly stated that this would not be an issue. “We have over 100,000 to 200,000 health professionals looking for work today,” Mutua commented. “There will be a lag of a day or two … but it is better than letting people die on the floor, at the gate, or suffer in pain”.

The New Landscape Of Paid Sick Time

By Elizabeth Rice, SPHR

This election year, the issue of paid sick leave is one of growing concern for employers, labor organizations, and legislators across the country. Since the beginning of the year, 12 states and the District of Columbia have seen the introduction of new legislation requiring employers to offer their employees paid sick leave in various forms. San Francisco and Washington, D.C. recently enacted legislature requiring employers to allow their staff to begin accumulating paid sick time based on hours worked. In May, New Jersey approved legislation requiring companies to offer six weeks of paid leave to workers wishing to care for a new child or sick relative. And in Ohio, advocacy groups are working to place a paid sick leave mandate on the November ballot requiring the accrual of paid sick time immediately upon beginning employment.

The Push for Paid Leave

The growing movement to make paid sick leave a basic labor standard in the United States stems from the fact that nearly half of all American workers are currently ineligible to receive pay for time missed due to illness (source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). Workers argue that when they become ill, they are forced to choose between going to work sick or missing wages – or, in some cases, risking a reprimand or dismissal.

Challenges for Employers

Employers, on the other hand, claim that covering the cost of mandatory paid sick time may force them to cut jobs, reduce employee wages and benefits, or even to go out of business altogether.

Meanwhile, in states where mandatory sick time legislation has already been enacted, keeping track of the varying laws from state to state presents nationwide employers with another challenge altogether. In New Jersey, for example, employees are required to partially fund their own paid leave through a payroll deduction, and must use accrued vacation time before accessing their allotted paid sick leave. In San Francisco, accrual of paid leave is tied to hours actually worked, while in Maine employers who voluntarily offer paid sick leave must follow state regulations regarding the flexibility of its use.

Employers operating in multiple states with varying laws regarding paid leave are charged with the time-consuming task of ensuring each employee is paid in compliance with his or her state’s laws. Those who fail to comply leave themselves subject to potential litigation and heavy penalties.

How Outsourcing May Help

For companies who lack the time and capacity necessary to keep up with varying sick leave laws across state lines, outsourcing employment through a nationwide employer of record may provide some much-needed relief. As the legal employer of record, these organizations assume responsibility for paying employees in compliance with their individual state’s laws. Employers operating out of one state but wishing to open additional offices in another can put their out-of-state staff on the employer of record’s payroll and no longer have to deal with compliance issues regarding that state’s labor laws: those responsibilities shift to the outsourcing company. Utilizing the expertise and nationwide capability of these types of organizations can help save businesses time and hassle, while dramatically reducing their risk of noncompliance.

US Federal Reserve raises interest rate from 5% to 5.25%

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The United States Federal Reserve has announced an increase of 25 basis points (0.25%) in the federal funds rate bringing it to 5.25 percent. It also announced its approval of a 25 basis point increase in the discount rate to 6.25 percent.

The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions such as banks lend balances they maintain at the Federal Reserve (called federal funds) to other banks overnight. The discount rate is the interest rate that an eligible bank is charged to borrow short term funds directly from the central bank through the discount window.

In its statement, the Fed said that growth is moderating from its quite strong pace earlier in the year, which it partly attributed to a cooling of the housing market and the delayed effect of increases in interest rates and energy prices. The Fed noted that inflation measures were “elevated” in recent months and that while productivity gains have held down increases in labor costs and inflation expectations “remain contained”. However, it pointed out that high levels of resource utilization and high energy and commodity prices have the potential to sustain inflation pressures.

In its outlook over its future moves, the Fed statement said “Although the moderation in the growth of aggregate demand should help to limit inflation pressures over time, the Committee judges that some inflation risks remain. The extent and timing of any additional firming that may be needed to address these risks will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.”

Train derails in South Africa; at least two dead

Thursday, April 22, 2010

A luxury train derailed in South Africa outside the capitol of Pretoria yesterday, killing at least two people and leaving 25 injured.

The train had been entering a station in Pretoria when seventeen cars derailed, apparently during a switch between steam and electric locomotives, although the exact cause is not known. The train had been coming from Cape Town, with 55 passengers and an unknown number of crew on board.

None of the dead were identified, and nationalities were not released. However, a spokesperson for the operator of the train, Rovos Rail, said that passengers were from several different countries, and that most customers of the railroad were from the US or Europe.

Chris Botha, an emergency worker at the scene said that the derailment had produced “absolute carnage.” According to him, “[s]ome of the railway coaches are lying on top of each other and absolute wreckages. They had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to cut some of the people free.” The section of track where the incident occurred has been closed off.

Get Rid Of Ailments Through Remedial Massage

Submitted by: Brian Goodwin

A remedial massage is another term for a deep tissue massage that is done to help the body return to a state of optimal health. This form of massage is usually done in order to treat a person who has been injured, and it is extremely effective against strains and sprains.

There is great demand for skilled practitioners of this form of massage because it is usually very effective in the treatment of injuries that do not respond well to the usual forms of medical treatment. A remedial massage is used in lots of circumstances where the person is advised against taking too much pain medication or anti inflammatory drugs. These massages are especially effective in the case of sports injuries, but they are also used for people who have had traumatic injuries and also for the elderly.

This is a very important field and it is growing in relevance since increasing numbers of people prefer therapeutic massages as a method of getting relief from injuries. A well trained remedial therapist can offer a wide range of massages apart from just sports massages. As a matter of fact, this form of massage, also called Myotherapy can be used to prevent injury as well.

This form of massage helps the body tremendously by increasing the blood flow in the body. The immediate result of this is that it helps to keep the entire system healthy by enabling nutrition to be provided to all parts of the body. This also helps to achieve lymphatic drainage, especially from the injured area. Lymphatic drainage is essential in order to get toxins and impurities moving so that they can be eventually removed from the body. Parts of the body that have a lot of inflammation usually have a lot of toxins, and a skilled massage therapist can help remove them.

A good massage is also essential to reduce swelling and inflammation in joints without the aid of any medicines. It is also used to help rectify joint problems by relaxing the muscles around the joints that are injured or dislocated. A good massage therapist can also strengthen the muscles and this is essential in order to prevent further recurrences of the problem.

Many people also use this treatment in order to get freedom pain, especially in chronic conditions. Painkillers have limited effect, especially when the problem is a long lasting one. Regular Myotherapy helps in the relief of pain in two important ways. Firstly, it reduces tensions and spasms in the muscles that are the root cause of this pain. In addition, it also helps to repair and soothe nerves that have been damaged due to any injury or illness.

There are many places that offer remedial massages these days, thanks to the growing demand for this type of treatment. You first have to make sure that the place you visit is certified and that it has well trained massage therapist. You should also try and speak to people who have undergone treatment there before you sign up for treatment.
