Gunman on the loose in Melbourne

Monday, June 18, 2007

Police in Melbourne, Australia are on the hunt for a gunman who killed a man and injured two others in the city’s central business district this morning.

Officials warned all office workers to remain indoors, and train services to Flinders Street Station were temporarily on hold, as investigations were carried out on the intersection of Flinders Lane and William Street.

Malcom Bates, who witnessed the shootings at around 8:15 a.m., said the gunman grabbed a woman from inside a taxi. “The lady got away and he turned and shot three people basically point blank,” Mr Bates said. “I was right across the road”. He said that the incident took no longer than the “wink of an eye”.

Paramedics struggled to revive the one victim for almost an hour before declaring him dead at the scene. The two injured people have been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Police believe the incident began at the Bar Code 24-hour bar in King Street, when a woman attempted to get into a taxi. She was apparently grabbed by the hair by the gunman who then shot her and two men who attempted to come to her aid.

Police have identified the gunman as Christopher Wayne Hudson, aged 29. They believe him to be a member of the Hells Angels bikie gang. Police have described Hudson as about 180 cm tall, with short brown hair and wearing a dark tracksuit top and dark denim jeans.

A building worker on a construction site on the corner of Queen and Flinders Streets has reportedly discovered a handgun. It is understood the gunman may have thrown the weapon into the site as he fled the scene.

US reveals Nazi war criminal’s location was known two years before his capture

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

The 27,000-pages of documents released on Tuesday reveal that while the United States and West Germany knew the location of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann two years before his capture, the fact was kept secret. The documents were declassified as part of the Nazi War Criminals Disclosure Act of 1998.

West German Intelligence informed the US in March 1958 of the whereabouts of the senior Gestapo officer, who was living under the alias “Clemens” in Argentina where he had arrived seven years earlier.

It was not US policy at the time to go after Nazi criminals since they were still recruited for Cold War operations.

“It now appears that West Germany could have captured him in 1958, if it wished to,” said University of Virginia historian Timothy Naftali. He also said that CIA helped West Germany at the time to suppress part of Eichmann’s diary – which was in the possession of Life magazine – that would have embarrassed West German national security adviser Hans Globke, himself a former Nazi.

Eichmann was captured by Israelis in 1960 in Argentina. He was tried in Jerusalem and received the death penalty.

Portable Oxygen A Handheld Lifesaver}

Submitted by: Dave Matthews

Portable oxygen concentrators were first introduced nearly 10 years again and have revolutionised the field of oxygen therapy. These oxygen machines vary in size from larger home based units to smaller, more portable pieces of equipment. All portable oxygen units are electrically powered and simply extract oxygen from the surrounding air in order to deliver it to the user in higher concentrations.

Regardless of the size of some of these units, they all provide the same function as they are all designed to be powered from the mains or a battery setup. As technology and design have improved over the years, these oxygen units have become smaller and much more simple and convenient to carry around. This has resulted in portable oxygen units that are usable for a much wider range of applications.

The air around us is predomenantly nitrogen, with the remainder being approximately 20% oxygen and 2% made up of other gases. Studies estimate that around 200 years ago the Earth’s atmosphere had an oxygen concentration of approximately 36%. This means that oxygen has decreased by around 0.8% every 15 years. This is due to a variety of reasons including air pollution and the destruction of rain forests. Oxygen concentration levels also vary depending on the altitude, with concentration being as low as 8% in some areas.

These portable units extract oxygen from the air and direct it into a regulated flow of concentrated oxygen at the required pressure level. They can be carried around quite comfortably by using either their handle, an accessory bag or even pulled around in a small cart which has a telescopic handle and wheels.

It is this portability that has revolutionised the way in which people are treated with oxygen. Rather than having to be treated at hospital, patients are now free to carry on with their daily lives and take part in social and sporting activities as well as jobs around the home. As oxygen equipment improves in it’s functionality and design, the list of tasks that patients are able to do grows ever larger.

A few years ago this loss of mobility was a real issue for people who were reliant upon oxygen. Until you find out that you require regular supplemental oxygen, you dont realise what an inconvenience it to miss out on event the most trivial aspects of life such as being able to go round to a friend’s house, going shopping or travelling to another country. In fact it is only very recently that these portable oxygen concentrators have been given approval for use on passenger flights.

The benefits of being able to carry on with everyday life and pursue these normal activities can never be overstated. The effect of being able to undertake seemingly minor activities has the effect of leading on and enabling the user to take part in larger activities. This new found freedom can impact on their mental state, allowing them to lead a much happier and positive life. This mental positivity may even have the effect of strngthening the immune system which adds to the patient’s all round well being.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Picasso’s painting sold for $95.2 million

Thursday, May 4, 2006Pablo Picasso‘s famous portrait of his lover has been auctioned for $95.2 million at Sotheby’s in New York on Wednesday. 1941 masterpiece “Dora Maar with cat/ Dora Maar au chat” was sold to an anonymous buyer. Questions About Acting Agent

Submitted by: Chris Johansen

My acting agent in the US has gone a long way in helping me in my acting career. He has been the one person who offered me an insight into the industry and helped open doors for me. As an actor or actress who is just starting out, you need an agent to help you in getting your career off the ground. The agent will help in getting you work and ensure that you are paid accordingly by negotiating your deals. Even when you get a job, the acting agent will always ensure that your career runs smoothly. He will be in charge of scheduling interviews for you with journalists and ensuring that you always have good public relations. An agent will work hard for you because the success of their career is largely dependent on the success of yours.

There are so many acting agencies in America; some are genuine while others are just scams. You therefore need to be very careful when hiring an acting agent. Some of the most important attributes that my acting agent in the U.S should have is honesty, integrity and good work ethics. A good agent will not try to exploit you for their own personal gains. One of the ways that you can tell if an agency is just a scam is by looking at their charges. If an agent starts to ask you to make a lot of payments even before he gets you a job, then most likely this is a scam and not a genuine agency.

Most of the best acting agencies in the US are the ones that registered with Screen Actors Guild (SAG).These Agents also align themselves with Actors Equity Association. Agencies that are associated with these unions are usually well reputable.

My acting agent in the U.S should be someone that I can easily communicate with. The agent is my link to the other people in the industry so that s why I need to have someone that I can communicate with. It is important for actors and actresses to take their time before signing up with an agent. This should never be a rush decision. You need to meet your potential agent and have a talk with him first. If you have to sign any contracts, go through it very carefully, make enquiries about the clauses that you don t understand.

My acting agent in the U.S should be someone with good negotiation skills. This is because the agent is the one in charge of negotiating contract or his clients. If you get someone who can t negotiate that you are doomed nor to get the best deals. Normally, a good acting agent will only charge you a commission for the jobs that they get you. This commission is usually at most 15% of your total pay for the job. The agent therefore should work hard to get you jobs so that they can get the commission. If your agent is not getting you any jobs and they are charging you for their jobs, then you are better off hiring someone else.

Elephants Dream: Free content 3D film released to the Internet

Friday, May 19, 2006

The 3D animated short film Elephants Dream, formerly known as Project Orange, was released to the Internet yesterday. The film is available under the Creative Commons Attribution License, allowing anyone to download, modify and distribute it. The 10-minute film has been called “the first open source movie” by NewsForge. Not only is the movie itself free content, even the computer files containing the 3D models used in the film are available under the same terms.

The project was first announced one year ago and was jointly produced by the Blender Foundation and the Netherlands Media Art Institute. The film tells the story of Emo and Proog, two men trapped inside a surreal machine world. Only freely available open source software was used to create the movie. Most of the work was done using Blender, a 3D modelling and rendering tool. The Blender Foundation is selling an extended edition on DVD, which includes subtitles in 34 languages, a Making Of documentary, commentary tracks, and all files used to create the movie.

In spite of the successful completion of the project, the Blender Foundation “has no intention to grow or expand into a company or studio” according to the project website. “Instead, the Foundation aims at endorsing and supporting activities within (educational) institutes, universities and companies.”

Pupils fed through gates, school criticised

Friday, September 15, 2006

Schoolchildren at Rawmarsh Comprehensive School in South Yorkshire, England, are being fed fish and chips by their parents through the school gates at lunchtimes because parents do not believe their children are being given enough choice of food at lunchtime.

The parents are standing outside the school gates in a cemetery to take the orders of food from the children, and then go and pick up the food for them. Parents say that this is because the children do not like the quality of food being served in the school cafeteria, and so the parents are only giving the children what they want – which is a hot and tasty lunchtime meal.

Head Teacher John Lambert has lashed back at the parents, calling the delivery of food through the gates immoral and stating that it is not “helping the children or their school” by bringing the junk food in. He also stated that “[The School] aims to provide good quality food which is within government healthy eating guidelines and helps the children’s learning in the afternoon”. Parents have defended the delivery of food by saying that not only are they receiving orders for burgers and chips, but also for salad rolls, jacket potatoes, and other healthy foods.
