Japan to use renewable energy

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

A new law which seeks to utilise reusable energy and minimise cost impact on consumers is under development in Japan. The new law, which would be effective from July 1 next year, would seek to reduce Japan’s dependency on nuclear power.

The new legislation would urge power utilities to cut costs by purchasing renewable energy from outside companies and private businesses. Japan’s decision has been referred to as opening the door on renewable energy, which currently only contributes to six percent of Japan’s energy sources.

Politicians have amended the bill, allowing the revised bill to pass through parliament later this month. Prime Minister Naoto Kan who is pushing for the bill to be passed in return for his resignation, has stated that the ‘feed-in-tariff on renewable energy will be set at a fixed price so that utilities are limited to purchasing electricity from renewable power generators. Kan hopes that this will encourage more business and private corporate partners to enter into the renewable energy market.

“As a medium-term revolutionary energy and environmental strategy, we have decided to start a thorough review of nuclear power policy and draw a roadmap for a reduction of the dependence on nuclear power” Mr Kan said.

Large companies are concerned about the new legislation as it will continue to affect profit margins which are low due to power shortages and high priced exports. The bill was changed to reduce the surcharge for large power companies after complaints from the Japanese steel industry. If the scheme is launched then consumers will face an increase on electricity bills as utilities can pass their costs onto end-users. Despite the governments promise to cap the surcharge for the next ten years, there is no reference to it in the revised bill.

Lawmakers hope that by adding a provision requiring utilities to streamline their operations, the impact on consumers will be minimized.

A third party group will be set up within the under the Agency for National Resources and Energy to ensure that the setting of fixed prices are fair and just.

Making The Right Choice From Awnings For Sale

Homestead Caravans

Caravans are sensitive beasts – and so are the accoutrements that can be used to expand their liveable areas. Caravan awnings, in particular, offer excellent opportunities for doubling the usable space of a van – but with an equally huge potential for disaster. Caravan awnings for sale, then, should be inspected thoroughly and with a little expert knowledge before money is shelled out.

When looking at caravan awnings for sale, the first thing to consider (it sounds obvious, but the number of people that come a cropper over this hurdle is terrifying) is whether the awning in question fits one’s caravan. Caravans come in all sorts of fiddly sizes, from pea-sized little, two-person getaways to monstrous twin-axled beasts practically the size of a small static. To make matters worse, not all caravans have awning fixtures in the same place: most vans are designed to hold an awning stretching all the way along the side of their shell, but some have slightly smaller awning areas or even front-loading ones. Awnings for sale, then, should be inspected closely to ensure they match the fixtures on the van one it’s planning to extend. The second thing a person inspecting caravan awnings for sale needs to be aware of (again, obvious enough but still a tripper-up of many) is the quality of the fabric the awning is made from. Is it waterproof? How thick is it? Awnings can be bought in any combination of materials, from tent vinyl through to fully treated canvas. Looking at awnings for sale, remember this: a super heavy duty canvas awning might look great, but when it gets wet, or when the wind gets up, it could actually prove too heavy for the side of your van. In high winds, a solid awning acts like a sail – which makes for a stupendously worrying night. A person looking at awnings for sale needs to choose a fabric suitable for the use in mind: a permanent awning may be better in thicker material, as its longevity offsets its ability to turn into a sail; while someone looking for a temporary holiday awning would be better off with a lightweight fabric that’s easier to stow. Awnings, like tents, come with all sorts of fixtures and fittings – poles and guy ropes. Awnings for sale should obviously include a full complement of these, plus spares. If necessary, ask to see the spares. Cheap awnings for sale sounds great until something snaps and you have nothing to replace it with. Beware of any awnings for sale that can’t be seen erected. People offering awnings for sale but not able to show them erect and attached presumably have something to hide – torn or mouldy fabric, missing struts, a lessened complement of ropes, poles, pegs or stays. An awning for a caravan isn’t just a smart add-on, after all – it’s an opportunity to create a whole living room sized piece of extra space, which can be used as a porch, a dining room, a storage area or a pleasant place to read and relax whilst sheltering from the wind inevitable to most British camp sites. ========================================

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Signs It’s Time For Single Hung Window Replacement In St Paul

byadmin

The right residential windows can make all the difference when it comes to security, energy-efficiency, and aesthetic appeal. Single hung windows are a popular choice for any home, as they offer a traditional aesthetic in addition to a high degree of home security, but even well-constructed single hung windows can’t last forever. Read on to find out about a few common signs that it’s time for Single Hung Window Replacement in St Paul.

Difficult to Open and Close

As with any windows, single hung windows should always be easy for any inhabitants to open and close from the inside. Unfortunately, older windows often have issues with their balance mechanisms, causing windows to slam shut without any warning at all. This can pose a serious safety hazard to the household’s inhabitants and their guests, so it’s best to have these older, faulty windows replaced with new ones as soon as possible.

Frequent Condensation

No matter what type of windows a house features, there should never be condensation or fog in between panes of glass. This moisture accumulation is usually caused by a failing window seal, and without that seal, windows can’t operate at optimum energy efficiency. Failing seals don’t always lead to noticeable condensation, though, so homeowners may also want to keep an eye out for a white film on their glass, which usually indicates that calcium deposits are building up due to excess condensation.

Energy Inefficiency

While modern windows are designed to provide a highly efficient heat barrier, often featuring double or triple-paned glass for maximum energy efficiency, older single hung windows were not as effective as their modern equivalents. Any homeowner with windows that are more than a few years old might want to consider calling a professional for Single Hung Window Replacement in St Paul to discover whether replacing their windows might help them lower their monthly heating and cooling bills.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

Enjoy A Los Angeles Hot Tub

Enjoy A Los Angeles Hot Tub

by

Claire Winters

Hot tubs are very popular these days with many people taking pleasure in them. There are important rules of safety to go by in order to get the most enjoyment out of your hot tub. Here are a few of the guidelines you should follow when you decide to use Los Angeles hot tubs.

Exactly why do people enjoy hot tubs so much? For many people it’s the temperature. Hot tubs can be extremely soothing, however the temperature shouldn’t be too hot. The temperature ought to be monitored so that it doesn t reach a place where it may scald the users. Several hot tubs use a digital thermometer that allows the users to observe the temperature any time. If your hot tub does not have one of these simple thermometers, you will need to get a floating thermometer to keep in the hot tub at all times. You can then monitor the temperature of the hot tub and switch the temperature down if the water begins to get too hot.

If the temperature of the hot tub is way too hot it may often be dangerous for many people. It is recommended by doctors that if you’re pregnant or perhaps a younger child that you ought to avoid getting in a hot tub. Children have much more sensitive skin than adults and their vulnerable skin can burn if the temperature is too warm. Women that are expecting may lose their unborn baby if they enter into water that’s too hot. In addition, individuals that have problems with certain diseases, like diabetes and heart disease, may need to speak with their physician before they think about getting into a hot tub. The warm water temperatures may cause serious injury to individuals who may already be suffering from certain illnesses. Tracking your health problem prior to deciding to get inside a hot tub is very important so you don t put yourself in danger of injury.

The top section of hot tubs may become very slick. As people get in and out of the tub, the ground can be wet and slick. You will need to hold onto the stair railing when getting in and out of the hot tub. Walk slowly along the surface and don’t run. Make sure your other guest are aware of this as well.

Specific chemicals are used in the hot tub so you avoid having harmful water conditions. You will have to clean your hot tub on a regular basis to keep it clean of bacteria as well as other harmful substances. For those who have quite a number of people in your hot tub, make sure you regularly monitor the chemical levels so you can add more chemicals as needed. Many hot tubs were created with a specific amount of people in mind. If you’re over the limit of people in the hot tub, there may be a greater chance that an injury can occur. Maintaining the proper number of people in the hot tub will guarantee that you as well as your guest, will remain safe. You might want to post a sign outside of the hot tub informing people of the number of individuals that the hot tub should really hold at one time.

It is fairly popular for individuals to put lights around their hot tub, so the water can be lit up at night. Be very mindful when doing this and verify that all the wires from the lights are covered and guarded correctly. It is never a good idea to mix water with electricity, since it can cause serious injury as well as death. You might want to hire an educated electrician so you can be assured that the work with the electrical wires have been shielded from the water.

Using a Los Angeles hot tub is extremely popular and could be just the ticket for a way to kick back and relax. By following safety rules, you can eliminate some of the risks that can come from using a hot tub. When you are the owner of a hot tub, you will need to educate your family and friends of all the rules that go together with the hot tub.
